Here’s a sad Chinese song with a lot of excellent words and vocabulary. The fact that it has a fairly slow tempo is also excellent for following along and reading the lyrics. The singers are singing about becoming older, regretting previous loves lost and all the things that are normally in this type of sad song.
There are quite a few idioms in this song, a good way to add a few more to the collection.
深 – Lets start with 深, meaning deep. This can be used in almost all the same ways it can be in English. Deep water, to feel a deep love for someone etc.
模样 – appearance, in the song he is asking what the people he has previously loved look like now.
遥不可及 – unattainable or out of reach. The singers are rather sadly saying that their dreams (梦想) are always out of reach.
凋谢 – the last character is 谢 meaning thanks. However, it also has the meaning to wilt away or decline.
This is one of the only videos I could find. The Chinese is written in traditional form (like Taiwan still uses) and the English translations are not particularly accurate, but you can certainly listen and follow the lyrics below.
老男孩 Song Lyrics
(Hover over the Chinese for pinyin)
抬头仰望着满天星河 – This should say 漫天 (星河 The Milky Way）
